We lost a heartbreaker tonight when Mike Contrastano's Moretrench (and you thought "Reachers" was a weird name) scored two runs in the top of the seventh and held on to win 2-1. The first two Moretrenchers hit unplayable nubbers up the third-base line. Pete let the second one go foul but the ump — assisted by vocal cues from the Moretrench bench — ruled that he touched it. They did manage a couple of clean hits to score the runners.
Nubbed Out
Our bats were anemic tonight with some notable exceptions. Fred Wertz hit a double off the fence in the bottom of the seventh and had the only RBI with a sac fly in the third. Jim Pezzuto had two hits, as did Mike Flaherty. Mark Smith had a nice double in the left field gap, but neither Rick nor I could bring him home. Jason had the only other hit tonight, and scored our run. Mark and Steve only got up twice, which is unfortunate because both were stroking the bat nicely.
We had a few nice plays in the field, including an inning-ending Tilly-to-Bohm-to-Dawkins DP with the bases loaded to end the second.
Larry Greiner sped up the Sprain after working late to offer moral support in the seventh inning and is the leading candidate for the year-end Robert Gold Trophy for Over-the-Top Team Spirit.
The next game is Monday at 9. The following 11 have said they'll play; we may have to do some juggling as I'm not sure yet about the intentions of Arch (who hurt his hamstring playing hoops yesterday) and Ed.
